Who he is...

Christopher P.A. Seltzer is a very proficient drummer and percussionist, and has played with many greats throughout his career such as Stanley Turrentine, Mary Alessi, and Dorinda Clark Cole, just to name a few. His style of playing is very enthusiastic, and his technical accuracy makes him stand out from the pack.

Born for music...

Born December 18, 1976, Seltzer grew up with music all around him. His father, Lee Seltzer Sr. is a drummer himself who toured with KC and the Sunshine Band, and his mother, Denise Seltzer was an excellent vocalist and Pastor. His two older brothers, Lee Seltzer Jr. (trumpet), and Deon Seltzer (baritone) further enhanced his musical surroundings. Chris, at age 3, would sit on his dad’s drum set and play in rhythm to any songs he heard on the radio. It was then that his father knew that Chris was serious about music. His love for music grew more and more as he would listen to some of his favorite groups and ensembles such as Earth Wind and Fire, Cameo, Kool and the Gang, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Shirley Caesar, The Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and various high school and collegiate drum lines.

Drumming school days...

Seltzer practiced hard through the growing years. At age 6 he played with his first Gospel group, Matthew and the Twilights, and at age 8 he played with his first big band, The Jimmy Chapell Band. Chris attended Ramsay Alternative High School, where he participated in the marching band as section leader of the drum line, and played drums and bells in the jazz band. He graduated from Ensley Magnet High School in 1995. During his time there he participated in the marching and jazz bands and received the Phillip Sousa Musician award of excellence his senior year. He was chosen first chair all-city (Birmingham, AL) all four years of high school, and made all-state (Alabama) his senior year.

Higher learner...

In 1995, Seltzer decided to further his studies, so he attended Alabama A&M University where he received a full scholarship majoring in music education with an emphasis in Percussion. There he participated in the Wind Ensemble, marching and stage (jazz) bands, the percussion ensemble, and pep band. During his time there he became a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity (Omicron Delta chapter). He later attended Kennesaw State University.

Future in music...

In August of 1999, Seltzer married his high school sweetheart, Marketta Bledsoe, and they have two wonderful children, David and Charity. After marrying Marketta, they moved to Atlanta, GA and there Chris was able to hit the Atlanta music scene. He started playing with a Rock group called Realm, and later was able to play with such greats as Norman Hutchins, James Bignon, and William Bell.

Music, music, and more music...

In 2004, Chris Seltzer established The Freestyle Percussion Foundation to teach drums and percussion to children and adults. Since it's inception, Freestyle has been growing by leaps and bounds. Seltzer continues to play for numerous venues and holds firm to his belief that “all things are possible if you believe.”
